About Us

The Nu Pentaton Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa was chartered at what was then Clarion State College on February 11, 1967. By that time, the group had grown to thirty-six men.  As was the practice of the national organization at that time, some members were initiated as brothers prior to the formal chartering of the chapter. The first member so chartered, was founder Wesley S. Semple, then of Penn Hills, who was initiated at the fraternity’s national convention in Los Angeles in September 1964.

A total of 523 men were initiated by the chapter through December 2007.  The group was closed at the insistence of Clarion University during the spring semester of 2008.  An attempt to recolonize the group between 2013 and 2016 was unsuccessful.

From approximately 1970 through 1988 the group also had what could be described as a lady’s auxiliary in its Little Sisters organization.  These groups were started with the assistance of the national organization following a failed attempt to take the national fraternity fully coeducational at the national convention in Memphis, Tennessee in 1970.  Unlike many such organizations nationwide, the group was not merely a collection of brothers’ girlfriends, but was a formal organization with its own membership criteria, meetings, and initiation ceremonies.  More than 120 women were initiated into the organization during its almost two decades of existence.  All such groups in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education were closed by order of the PSSHE on the grounds of gender equity, given that they were subject to direction by the fully-male fraternities.

Through its forty years of continuous existence the fraternity developed several annual events, some of which have continued (and grown) following dissolution of the active chapter.  Among these were Mary’s Party—an annual weekend campout in April held for most of its existence along the Clarion River, an annual golf outing—which has grown in recent years, an annual Founders’ Day celebration in March to celebrate the national organization’s founding on March 15, 1873, participation in Clarion University’s annual homecoming activities, and most recently an alumni dinner in late spring in the Pittsburgh area.

Alumni activities are coordinated through the nationally-chartered alumni club, the Nu Pentaton Area Alumni Association. In addition, the group has a Pennsylvania-chartered housing corporation—Nu Pi, Inc., which was the vehicle for the ownership and management of fraternity housing when the active chapter had such fraternity-owned housing.
